Mad Fish Shiraz 2016

Across the South-West, the winter of 2015 was mild with sufficient rains to replenish catchments. The spring, less blustery than preceding years gave way to a hot start to summer and the season progressed, the weather conditions across the grape growing regions began to diverge.

The Great Southern spent the vintage in and out of humid on-shore streams, while other grape growing parts of the South-West experienced a significant and unprecedented deluge in late January, which was more blessing than curse, due to the dryness of the soil and the timing of the event.

In Margaret River the remainder of the vintage period progressed with little weather distractions whereas the Great Southern was peppered with annoying rains, humidity and birds, these challenges bringing out the best in our viticulturists.

In review, the quality of the 2016 vintage ranges from good to great across all varieties, thanks to the diligent efforts of our vineyard team to select only the best grapes under sometimes difficult circumstances.

Tasting notes

The 2016 MadFish Shiraz displays all the strengths and beneficial flavour characteristics common to the regions which comprise the blend. Vibrant, ripe and alluring raspberry, cherry and blackberry aromas are beautifully complemented by subtle vanilla and baking spice accents, and all these elements flow through to the palate where they mingle with gentle mocha and cinnamon notes. The mouthfeel is silky soft yet with sufficient tannin grip to retain flavour on the mid-palate and provide a pleasant lingering aftertaste of pure Shiraz satisfaction.
